Hey! I'm Emily. I've always had equal passions for people and art, so much so that I received certifications in photography and degrees in social work. Capturing family memories is the best of both worlds! I'd love to be a part of your story.
For those of you thinking about preparing for an at-home newborn session, I am here to help! Newborn sessions at home are my favorite because I love seeing your family in the comfort of your own space. Unlike posed studio sessions, at-home sessions are more relaxed, natural, and emotional in that you get to just be who you truly are in your home. It’s a genuine glimpse into your life and story. To help your session go as seamlessly as possible, follow some of these tips:
I typically like to capture babies within the first two weeks of being born! The sleepier they are, the more seamless it is to transition them between poses. If they are sleepy and comfortable, they will be less likely to need feeding in between shots!
Anytime between nine o’clock in the morning to two o’clock in the afternoon is usually a good timeframe. Natural light is the best light! At Emily Photography, we focus on capturing those soft and organic portraits that tell your family’s story. It’s important to choose the best rooms in your home that provide the most natural light for photos.
Your home doesn’t need to be perfectly spotless. It should look like you live there! Just focus on tidying up any laundry or anything else that could be lying around. Avoid any unwanted objects in the background.
Focus on soft, neutral color tones that compliment each other – you don’t have to all match perfectly. If you need help deciding on what to wear, you can sign up to view my free style guide or you can also browse my studio wardrobe on instagram! Gather a few outfits for the baby as well if you want them in something specific! I will also bring a few props/accessories to your session that you can choose from.
Your baby sets the pace for the session. Keeping them cozy is the number one priority. Try to feed your baby 10-20 minutes before I arrive. A fed baby is often a sleepy and happy one. This allows us more time for photos rather than stopping to feed more! Keep your home temperature on the warmer side as well, however, I do bring my space heater if it’s needed.
The beauty of having an at-home newborn session is the genuine moments. Whether it’s feeding them, snuggling, or simply admiring them – those moments as a parent become the most heart-felt photos. Relieve yourself of the pressure to pose and simply be natural. Focus on enjoying the time with your new baby and the love between you and your family. Leave the rest to me to capture the magic!
I absolutely adore capturing all of that newborn love and newness. It is a pleasure to witness these little bundles of joy and see their families loving on them. If you are expecting and thinking of preparing for an at-home newborn session, I’d love to hear from you! Get in touch with me today 🙂
